As educators, we are all out here doing this Distance Learning due to the COVID-19 school closures. The idea of meeting students on a digital platform is scary enough, but trying to engage those learners through a digital platform is even more overwhelming. One of the biggest challenges I was coming across is getting students to regularly log in to meetings. I decided that I needed to create something that would make students want to log in. It needed to feel fun and it needed to feel like a game.
I created this lesson on “Changing Perspective” for students who are struggling with social distancing and being “safe at home”. I get it, day after day with the same people can get old… It can make it easy to become irritated. This lesson is designed to help students avoid distractions and worries about the things happened that we cannot control and change their perspective to focus on the things that we can control. It is also designed to remind students to have more empathy towards others.
I started this lesson by sharing things that we can control, and things that we cannot control. We brainstormed these lists together. Next, to add to the interest, I asked students to join me for a directed drawing. Next we followed a Google Slide presentation – I shared my screen with students using ZOOM. Lastly, I asked students to work on coloring their drawings and we did a “Show & Share” at the beginning of the next meeting. The BEST part was, they were excited to show up for the next meeting! π
